Got a role to fill or skills to offer? The VMS connects groups and neighbours quickly and with care. Below you’ll find clear answers to common questions plus practical tips to help you get great matches and build trust.
Quick FAQs
What is the VMS?
A new feature on the GNN website that connects member groups with volunteers through two paths: groups can post opportunities and search a pool of willing volunteers; visitors can browse and find roles that fit their interests.
Who can use it?
- Member groups (via their assigned group admin) can post roles and search for volunteers. Admins must be registered and assigned to their group.
- Site visitors—both registered and non-registered—can browse published opportunities.
Where do I find it?
- Group admins: go to your group page → Volunteer Opportunities (to post) or Find Volunteer (to search the member pool).
- Visitors: see Volunteer with Us or use the global search in the main menu.
Is everything public?
Approved opportunities are visible to all site visitors (including non-members).
How are matches found?
- Groups search the volunteer pool using filters (interests, time, format, location, etc.).
- Visitors discover roles via global or localized search on Volunteer with Us.
Are listings moderated?
Yes. All opportunity submissions are reviewed; approval typically takes 1–3 days.
Who do I contact for help?
Email webmaster@gnntoronto.ca for questions, feedback, or support.
Trust & Safety
Why moderation?
To protect volunteers and groups, ensure quality, and keep the directory relevant to community climate action. (All opportunities are moderated before going live.)
Who can create opportunities?
Only assigned group admins from GNN member groups. This keeps postings authentic and reduces spam.
What information is visible?
Once approved, the opportunity page is public so volunteers can discover and apply. (Look for “How to Apply” details in each post.)
What if I see an issue in a listing?
Flag it by emailing webmaster@gnntoronto.ca—we’ll investigate and correct or remove as needed.
Tips for Member Groups (Adoption & Quality Matches)
1) Write a role volunteers want to click
Use a clear title and a short, inviting summary. Specify the impact, time needed, and what success looks like. (These map directly to the “Interest Area/Category,” “Commitment Duration,” and “Role Type” volunteers search on.)
2) Be precise about time & format
Choose Availability, Time Availability, and Format (in-person or remote). If it’s in person, include nearest intersection or postal code for better local matches.
3) Call out the right skills
List the must-haves (e.g., Canva, multilingual outreach, tabling comfort) and keep the rest as “nice-to-haves.” This helps the filterable Skills field work for you.
4) Set realistic commitment
Pick Short-term, Ongoing, or One-time (event) and rough hours/week or month. Volunteers filter by this, so alignment matters.
5) Make applying easy
Use “How to Apply” to state a simple next step: email address, quick form, or short intro message. (Spell out response timelines too.)
6) Post early; refresh often
Moderation can take up to 1–3 days. If plans or details change, update the listing to keep it accurate and trustworthy.
7) Use the volunteer search
After you post, visit Find Volunteer on your group page and filter the member pool by interest, format, and time. Reach out to great matches proactively.
Tips for Volunteers (Finding the Right Fit)
1) Browse first, then fine-tune
Use the global search (main menu) or head to Volunteer with Us to scan openings; then narrow by keywords (skills, format, neighborhood).
2) Read the “How to Apply”
Each listing explains exactly how to get in touch and what to include. (Short intros with your availability + top skills work well.)
3) Want to be discoverable?
Create a GNN account and complete your Volunteer Interest profile so group admins can find you in their searches.
4) Check commitment & format
Filter for remote or in-person and the hours you can offer to avoid mismatches.
5) Keep safety & boundaries in mind
Ask clarifying questions, agree on tasks and timelines, and share only the contact details you’re comfortable using for volunteer work.
Improve Your Matches (For Everyone)
1) Clarity wins.
Clear titles, short summaries, and realistic time asks help people say “yes” faster. (They also improve search relevance.)
2) Consistency builds trust.
Update listings if dates, locations, or requirements change; close them when filled.
3) Match on values and logistics.
Use Interest Areas, Format, Location, and Time filters thoughtfully—these are the biggest drivers of a good fit.
4) Be responsive.
A quick acknowledgment (even “Thanks—we’ll reply within 3 days”) keeps momentum and confidence high.
5) Ask for feedback.
If a match doesn’t work out, invite suggestions to improve the next posting or search.
