Curious about heat pumps? GNN is linking you to THE Network this fall. Get tools, training, and support to launch your own program. The movement’s rolling—don’t miss the ride!
What if I told you there was a way to cut your home energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and improve comfort all at the same time? The miraculous solution I discovered lies in the heat pump. A recent study found that homes in colder climates benefit the most, achieving 41% to 52% reductions in energy use when heat pumps are paired with upgrades like improved insulation. This translates to 35% cuts in residential GHG emissions and 30% on heating bills. For those working on climate solutions, these numbers are nothing short of inspiring, and for GNN member group, The Toronto Home Energy Network (THE Network) and its Executive Director, Jake Miller, they became a call to action.
I was curious to learn more about heat pump initiatives in Toronto and that’s when I reached out to Jake to learn about the amazing work THE Network is doing. While calculating carbon footprints, Jake was astonished by the many benefits of heat pumps, and equally shocked that so few people knew what they were. His desire to help start a community-based organization advocating for home electrification, combined with his excitement about mobilizing people around climate action and creating win-win outcomes, such as comfortable homes and stable energy prices, sparked his journey with the Toronto Home Energy Network.
Mission: Community Strength, Climate Advocacy
I was moved by THE Network’s approach, which is rooted in the power of community. THE Network relies on its partner communities for climate change advocacy. Honest testimonials from trusted neighbours about the benefits of switching to heat pumps go a long way in spreading the word and attracting new members. Communities of trust are the foundation of their work. Storytelling plays a central role in showing how home electrification benefits real people. Their community partners find joy in being present in neighbourhoods, meeting residents, and discovering how each person can contribute to building climate-resilient communities in Toronto.

From Humble Beginnings to Transformational Action
THE Network, I learned, began in a small neighbourhood of under 1,000 homes called The Pocket: a community that was home to progressives and sustainability-minded professionals. Their project and GNN member group, Pocket Change, aimed to help residents replace gas appliances with electric ones. Neighbours shared their own home electrification stories with neighbours in backyards, and as the word spread, the project gained media attention. Soon, emails poured in from across the city, with people asking for similar initiatives in their own communities. The overwhelming response inspired organizers to launch other community-led groups and equip them with the resources they needed to get started. Thus, the Toronto Home Energy Network was born.
From the beginning, the mission was clear: to guide Toronto’s 420,000 single-family homes and their neighbours along a pathway to electrification, helping them transition away from gas with the support of expert advice and community knowledge-sharing.
For Jake Miller and THE Network team, success isn’t measured in numbers alone: it’s in the stories. Nothing excites Jake more than hearing that a homeowner attended a Network event or connected with their program and then made the decision to install a heat pump. Seeing people enjoy warmer, more comfortable homes while lowering their bills and emissions is what defines success for THE Network.
Growth Is On The Agenda
With their mission well established, THE Network is now focused on community expansion. This fall, they’re launching a themed “Fall Furnace” campaign, encouraging homeowners to assess whether it’s time to replace old furnaces with sustainable options before winter arrives. Two new team members are joining the staff, helping to spread awareness, engage more neighbours, and grow the community’s reach.
People Behind the Scenes
The people making the Toronto Home Energy Network’s work possible remind me of Brene Brown’s words:
“We don’t derive strength from rugged individualism, but from our collective ability to plan, communicate, and work together. Our neural, hormonal, and genetic makeup support interdependence over independence.”
This spirit of interdependence shines in their six volunteer board members, three full-time staff, growing partner communities, and investment from partners like Toronto Hydro and TAF. Each contributes time, resources, and expertise, often going above and beyond to support and encourage the mission.

The Lasting Effects of Environmental Action
For THE Network, personal and community environmental actions are deeply connected. Individual actions that reduce emissions can ripple into community-wide change when people share their experiences, create space for dialogue, and answer questions. Just as seeing green vehicle license plates or solar panels can inspire neighbours to follow suit, conversations about heat pump adoption can have a contagious effect.
How to Get Involved
THE Network will be giving a presentation to GNN members this fall on how to bring a heat pump program into their communities. Stay tuned to learn more about how to join THE Network and get a full suite of resources and support to help you on your way! This is a burgeoning, new organization so hop on-board and don’t miss the train! Connect with THE Network at: info@THENetwork.to.
“Few climate solutions are this simple. There are no drawbacks, just better technology, more comfortable homes, and stable energy costs. Heat pumps aren’t just an upgrade: they’re our fastest route to a clean, comfortable and resilient future.” – Jake Miller
