The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and Torontonians are packing up their cars for summer cottage weekends. We all love beating the city heat and getting out into nature during the summer, so let’s be mindful of caring for our amazing forests and great lakes by keeping our cottage trips eco-friendly. Here are five tips you can use to make your cottage weekend an environmentally conscious one.

Shop at Your Local Farmer’s Market

Not only is shopping at a local farmer’s market fun, but it means supporting small, sustainable farming. Plus, purchasing local means less greenhouse gases are emitted to get your food from the farm to your table.

Reduce Food Waste and Food-Related Garbage

One of the best parts of getting away to the cottage is sharing meals with friends and family. And when you plan your meals ahead of time, you can reduce food waste and save money while doing it. Plus, don’t forget tupperware for food storage and reusable bags for groceries to keep single-use plastics out of landfills.

Choose Eco-Friendly Products

It’s always a good idea to choose environmentally-friendly products, but it’s especially important when you’re in an ecologically sensitive area. Cottages often rely on septic tanks and nearby bodies of water, and harsh chemicals can lead to water contamination. Purchasing sunscreen, soap, shampoo, and cleaning products with the environment in mind will help keep lakes clean and local animals healthy.

Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints

As the old adage goes, enjoy nature without leaving a trace. Bring garbage, recycling, and compost back to your cottage and leave natural items where you found them. And, if you want to be a climate hero, consider picking up litter you come across. Your local wildlife will thank you.

Bonus tip: If you own your own cottage, be sure to fix leaky faucets right away. You’d be surprised how much water you’ll save!

This is an important topic- thank you for these great tips! Also- GHGs from travel to and from the cottage is one of their biggest impacts. Carpool to reduce the number of vehicles traveling. Take a vehicle with better gas mileage- or an EV. If you can, plan fewer longer cottage stays, rather than joining the Friday afternoon migration each weekend.

    Keep up the good work!
