HERE’S WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS SAY…

The community is very positive and provides a nice balance of volunteer opportunities that aren’t overwhelming. Everyone is always ready to lend a helping hand. I feel that I am making a difference when providing newsletter content for the readers. It demonstrates that you can still support environmental events and showcase news even online during the pandemic.

[GNN] is a fun group of action-oriented people! I’ve learned so much about Toronto, the environment, and the Canadian culture while volunteering here! [One of my most meaningful experiences volunteering was] being a small part of EcoFair 2020, where we pulled off a month-long event like no corporate could even! It was meaningful because it showed me the power of volunteering. Together we can make a difference!

Is there no neighbourhood green group near you? Start one!

A neighbourhood green group is a great way to have fun, make friends, get involved, contribute to your neighbourhood, share your knowledge & skills, learn from others – and create a greener, more sustainable community. A nicer place for everyone. Start by signing up to join GNN!

  1. Visit other green groups in the city

A great way to get started is to visit other green groups in the city to see what they are like, what they do, and how they do it. Ask the founder how they got started. What would work for you in your neighbourhood? What would be similar? What different?

  1. Connect with your neighbours on social media or on the street

Find a few like-minded people in your neighbourhood and host a get-together. Learn about the environmental issues of concern in your community. Find out what activities you could do together to improve things.

  1. Pick an achievable goal

Is there an achievable goal with enough volunteers to make it happen? If so, you are on your way to starting a new neighbourhood green group!

  1. Talk to your city councillor

Ask if they know other people or groups with similar concerns in your riding. Ask for help with promotion through their newsletter or on social media. Invite them to your event.

  1. Connect through GNN

Let us know your plans. We can share your invitation with GNN members in your neighbourhood, and we can help promote it in the GNN newsletter and on social media. Be sure to have a look at our other organizational planning resources.
