Want to pitch in with your skills and time? Here’s your friendly, step-by-step guide to finding (and landing) volunteer opportunities through GNN’s Volunteer Matching System (VMS).

Who this is for

  • Anyone browsing the site (no account required) who wants to see open roles.
  • Registered members who want smarter matches and to be discoverable by groups.

Tip: You can browse without an account, but if you want groups to find you based on your interests and availability, create a free account and complete your Volunteer Interest Profile.

Two easy ways to find roles

Option A — Browse from the “Volunteer with Us” page

  1. Open the page: In the main menu, go to Our Network → Volunteer with Us.
  1. Scroll to “Volunteer Opportunities.” You’ll see the latest postings.
  1. Use the localized search & filters (optional) to narrow results by:
    • Title / keywords
    • Interest Area / Category (e.g., Event Support, Social Media & Design, Research & Advocacy, etc.)
    • Format (In-person, Remote, Hybrid)
    • Location (City or postal code for nearby in-person roles)
    • Required Skills (free text)
    • Commitment Duration (One-time, Short-term, Ongoing)
    • Role Type (Leadership/Coordination, Support/Action-Oriented, Advisory/Strategic)
  1. Open an opportunity to view the full details and How to Apply instructions.

Option B — Search from anywhere (Global Search)

  1. Click the search icon (top-right of any page).
  2. Type your criteria (e.g., “graphic design,” “remote,” “weekends,” “Parkdale”).
  3. In the live suggestions, scroll to “Volunteer Openings” and click a result to open the posting.

How to read a posting (what to look for)

Each opportunity includes:

  1. Opportunity Title
  2. Featured Image (when provided)
  3. Description — what you’ll do, why it matters
  4. Member Group Name
  5. Interest Area / Category
    e.g., Event Support · Content Creation · Social Media & Design · Admin & Coordination · Fundraising & Grants · Community Outreach · Education & Facilitation · Research & Advocacy · Technical Support · Data Management · Mentorship & Training · Photography & Videography
  6. Location — city or postal code for proximity to in-person events
  7. Format — In-person / Remote / Hybrid
  8. Required Skills — tools, platforms, or strengths the group needs
  9. Commitment Duration — One-time · Short-term (3–6 months) · Ongoing
  10. Role Type — Leadership/Coordination · Support/Action-Oriented · Advisory/Strategic
  11. How to Apply — email, form link, or message instructions

Quick scan checklist

  • Can I meet the time and format?
  • Do my skills align?
  • Is the location workable (if in-person)?
  • Is the duration realistic for me?

How to apply (the right way)

Follow the How to Apply instructions on the posting. That might be:

  • An email address
  • A form link
  • A request to message the group

Simple email template you can copy:

Subject: Volunteer Application — [Role Title]

Hi [Group Name],

I saw your “[Role Title]” posting on GNN and would love to help. I can commit [X hours/week] for [duration], and I’m available [days/times].
Relevant skills/experience: [brief bullet list].
Happy to chat more—thanks for considering me!

[Your Name] · [Phone/Email] · [Link (portfolio/LinkedIn, if any)]

Tip: Mention why the role/issue matters to you. A little context goes a long way.

Want groups to find you? (Recommended)

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Do I need an account to browse?

No. Browsing is open. To be discoverable by groups (and to save your interests), register and complete your Volunteer Interest Profile.

I applied but haven’t heard back.

Give it 7–10 days. Then follow up once. If the contact info looks outdated, let us know at webmaster@gnntoronto.ca and we’ll nudge the group.

I can’t find roles that fit.

  • Broaden your Interest Areas and Format.
  • Try different keywords in Global Search.
  • Check back weekly—new postings arrive regularly.

How is my info used?

Your Volunteer Interest info is shared with member group admins when they search for volunteers that match their criteria. (You can edit your info anytime in your profile.)

Can I edit my Volunteer Interest later?

Yes—go to My Profile → Volunteer Interest, update, and save.
