The City Island is a 75 minute film by Toronto filmmaker Elizabeth Littlejohn. It covers the history of the Island and the story of the successful struggle to keep a residential community. Its a wonderful film. We’ll have two speakers after the film: Norm di Pasquale of No Jets T.O. and Anne Keary of CAPE (Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment). We’ll also give some time to fill in the survey right on the spot – bring your computer or do it on your phone. All your questions will be answered! So join us if you can. No charge – Donations welcome!
AIRPORT EXPANSION PROPOSAL OVERVIEW
Ontario Premier Doug Ford wants to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport including adding jets, extending the runway, and increasing annual passenger capacity from 2 million to 10 million. All of these things are harmful to the health and safety of the people and wildlife who live near the waterfront, and the 17 million who go to enjoy the waterfront every year..
Ford’s government passed legislation to take over the city’s airport lands and make it a ‘special economic zone,’ in an effort to fast-track the expansion. However, it’s the federal government that holds the cards – the Toronto Port Authority owns and runs the airport and it is a federal body. So if you’re concerned about jets taking off every 2.5 minutes, spewing ultrafine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide into the air – materials for which there are no safe thresholds for exposure for living creatures – let your MP know you want to stop the expansion plans AND respond to the federal consultation that is going on now (but only until July 24).
